Sonologue Final Draft Reflection
During yet another monologue performance, I have learned a lot. I practiced more than my other monologue before this one, and I really tried to get it right. This monologue was special, though, because we got to choose our own songs to make into a monologue. I chose the song, “Fix You” by Coldplay, and I think that made my performance a little more meaningful because this song means a lot to me.
I would say that one of my strengths were showing emotion. When my peers sent emails to give me tips when I performed one draft for them, I got a couple saying that I really acted as though I were sad. Although I did try to show some other emotions like frustration and exhaustion, I think this part of my sonologue was pretty good. One weakness I had in my final draft would be not really knowing where to walk and what to do with my hands. I got some advice from the class, but I don’t think I totally nailed it in the end. I do, though, think I did pretty well with my other blocking, like showing the opposition in the sentences and words by moving to opposite sides of the stage.
If I had more time, I would change my fidgeting. I noticed that I did shift around the stage a little in movements that weren’t part of my blocking. Although, I did have some blocking that were obvious that they were supposed to be there.
Even though my monologue wasn’t perfect, I’m satisfied with my performance because i’m just proud that I was even able to go and perform in front of people in the first place. I’m usually shy when I’m not with my friends, and before this class, I wouldn’t have been able to do anything like what we’re working on in class.
I think everybody in my Dramatic Arts class did very well with their own monologue performances. There were a couple monologues that surprised me because they were so good. I really liked Jordan’s, because he merged two songs into one. He made it sound like they were meant to be merged, and it did sound like he was telling us a real story. There was a point in Jordan’s monologue where he changed the whole emotion of his story- it was when he talks about his dad dying. This engaged the audience because it was such a fast switch of tones that everybody noticed it. People’s movement around the stage also engaged the audience because you couldn’t help but to follow where they were going with your eyes.
